Drew Brees Biography
Drew Brees is recognized as one of the top quarterbacks in National Football League history, with his career achievements earning him induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame as a first-ballot member of the Class of 2026. After a standout college football career at Purdue University, Brees was selected by the San Diego Chargers in the NFL Draft. At Purdue, he became the Big Ten career leader in major passing categories and was named Academic All-American of the Year, Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year, and Maxwell Award winner. He also led the Purdue Boilermakers to the Rose Bowl, marking the team's first appearance in that game in more than three decades.
Brees faced significant adversity in his professional football career, including a severe shoulder injury that led to his departure from the Chargers. He signed with the New Orleans Saints, joining the team in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. In his first season with New Orleans, Brees led the team to the NFC Championship Game and received the NFL's Walter Payton Man of the Year Award for his performance on the field and his philanthropic efforts. Alongside head coach Sean Payton, Brees helped transform the Saints into a leading offensive team and a symbol of resilience for the city. His experience and recovery are chronicled in his book, "Coming Back Stronger: Unleashing the Hidden Power of Adversity."
Brees led the Saints to a victory in Super Bowl XLIV, earning Super Bowl MVP honors after throwing for more than 300 yards and two touchdowns in a win over the Indianapolis Colts. Throughout his 20-season NFL career, Brees ranked second all-time in passing yards and touchdown passes, while setting a league record for completion percentage at the time of his retirement. He led the league in passing yards seven times, completion percentage six times, and was selected to 13 Pro Bowls. Under Brees, the Saints won four consecutive NFC South titles and were regular playoff contenders.
Off the field, Brees directed significant charitable efforts through the Brees Dream Foundation, supporting the rebuilding of schools, playgrounds, athletic facilities, and community centers in New Orleans, particularly in areas affected by Hurricane Katrina. His contributions to the community have been recognized with his induction into the New Orleans Saints Hall of Fame.
