Ed Smart Biography
Ed Smart is an internationally recognized child safety advocate, author, and keynote speaker whose life changed when his daughter Elizabeth Smart was abducted from their Salt Lake City home. Smart is the father of Elizabeth Smart, who was abducted and rescued nine months later. A real estate and mortgage broker by profession, Smart holds a Bachelor of Business Administration in finance and a Master of Business Administration with an emphasis in urban planning from George Washington University. His personal and professional experiences have contributed to his role as a prominent voice in child protection and public safety.
Following his daughter's kidnapping, Smart became active in child safety advocacy. He played a key role in promoting the "Amber Alert" system to enhance the safety and rescue of children nationwide. Alongside other advocates, Smart lobbied Congress and the Senate for the passage of the National Amber Alert plan, the Adam Walsh Act, and The Protect Our Children Act. His legislative efforts helped shape the national framework for protecting missing and exploited children.
Smart has served as a spokesperson for child protection, supporting legislation and nonprofit organizations focused on the prevention and recovery of missing children. He has worked with and served on the board of several nonprofit agencies, including the National Child ID program sponsored by the American Football Coaches Association, radKIDS, and the I Keep Safe program from the Governors' Spouses Coalition for Internet safety. Smart served as executive director of the Elizabeth Smart Foundation, was president of the Surviving Parents Coalition, and was rehab and prevention program director with Operation Underground Railroad, a nonprofit group working to rescue children from sex trafficking. He has also delivered a TEDx talk on human trafficking and hope, amplifying his message globally.
Smart and Lois Smart published the book "Bringing Elizabeth Home: A Journey of Faith and Hope," documenting their experience during the search for their daughter and the role of faith in their lives. The book became a New York Times Bestseller and was adapted into the television movie "The Elizabeth Smart Story." These works established Smart as a public figure committed to turning personal tragedy into lasting change in the field of child safety advocacy.
In addition to his work in child safety, Smart has spoken openly about his personal journey. He publicly came out as gay and has since addressed this experience extensively, including serving as a keynote speaker at a Utah LGBTQ summit. Smart remains active as a lobbyist and advocate for victims and their families, addressing topics such as child protection, LGBTQ advocacy, and resilience.
