Brooke Axtell Biography
Brooke Axtell is a human rights activist, writer, speaker, and performing artist recognized for her advocacy in the movement to end gender-based violence. At age 7, Axtell experienced sex trafficking by her nanny. As an adult, she survived a physically and emotionally abusive relationship in which her partner threatened her life. She has since dedicated her career to using storytelling, poetry, and public advocacy to address trauma and promote healing.
Axtell was featured in a segment at the 57th Annual Grammy Awards, delivering a spoken word performance following a speech by U.S. President Barack Obama on domestic violence and preceding a performance by singer Katy Perry dedicated to domestic violence victims. Her work as a writer, speaker, performing artist, and activist has appeared in the New York Times, LA Times, Rolling Stone, Time Magazine, Wall Street Journal, and CNN. Axtell has also spoken at the United Nations and the U.S. Institute for Peace, contributing to global conversations on human rights and survivor empowerment.
Axtell is the author of the memoir "Beautiful Justice: Reclaiming My Worth After Human Trafficking and Sexual Abuse," which details her experiences with sex trafficking and her journey toward healing and empowerment. She is the recipient of the Phyllis Smart Young Prize for Poetry, and her poetry collection, "Daughter of the Burning," was nominated for the Violet Crown Award by the Texas Writer's League. As a singer and poet, she has released three albums and two collections of poetry, furthering her impact in the fields of trauma recovery and survivor advocacy.
Axtell is the founder and director of She is Rising, a healing community for women and girls overcoming rape, abuse, and sex trafficking. Through mentorship programs, retreats, and workshops, she supports survivors in developing leadership skills. As director of the Survivor Healing and Empowerment Program at SAFE Alliance, Axtell has developed support services for survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking. She is a member of the Speaker's Bureau for RAINN, the largest anti-sexual assault organization in the United States, and serves as an advisor for Freedom United, a global initiative to end human trafficking. Through her work as an author, poet, musician, and advocate, Axtell advances awareness of trauma recovery, survivor empowerment, and the importance of speaking out against gender-based violence.
