Lisa Blackwell Biography
Lisa Blackwell, Ph.D., is a research psychologist specializing in growth mindset science. She is the co-founder and president of Mindset Works, a company focused on growth mindset development. Blackwell holds a doctorate in psychology from Columbia University. Her research centers on understanding factors that support student achievement and motivation, with a particular emphasis on the role of growth mindset—the belief that abilities can be developed through effort and learning.
Blackwell's work in educational psychology includes studies following students transitioning to seventh grade, demonstrating that those with a growth mindset show greater motivation and academic performance in mathematics compared to peers with a fixed mindset. Her research also highlights how teaching students about brain plasticity can improve academic outcomes. Additional studies have examined teacher-delivered growth mindset interventions for adolescents in Grades 6 and 7, showing that such programs can improve grades, especially among students whose teachers previously held fixed mindset beliefs. These findings underscore the impact of growth mindset interventions in educational settings.
Blackwell developed the motivational curriculum for the program "Brainology," serving as principal designer and producer for its prototype. She has experience in education leadership, professional development, curriculum design, and data analysis, and advises schools and districts on implementing the "Brainology" approach.
Before co-founding Mindset Works, Blackwell worked at New Visions for Public Schools, providing leadership development and facilitating action research and data analysis for secondary schools. She also consulted on school-based data analysis for the New Century High School Initiative. Blackwell's work has been featured in TIME, New York Magazine, Good Morning America, and National Public Radio, as well as in academic publications. Her contributions continue to influence the fields of psychology, education, and learning science.
