Gerhard Ludwig Weinberg (born 1 January 1928) is a German-born American diplomatic and military historian noted for his studies in the history of World War II. Weinberg currently is the William Rand Kenan, Jr. Professor Emeritus of History at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

About Gerhard L. Weinberg Dr. Weinberg earned a BA in Social Studies from the NY State College for Teachers, now the University at Albany, in 1948, and a MA and PhD in History from the University of Chicago in 1949 and 1951 respectively. After serving in the US Army in 1946-47, he was a Research Analyst for the War Documentation Project at Columbia University (1951-54), Visiting Lecturer in History at the University of Chicago (1954-55), and Visiting Lecturer in History at the University of Kentucky (1955-56). Next, Dr. Weinberg served as Director of the American Historical Association Project for Microfilming Captured German Documents (1956-57), Assistant Professor of History at the University of Kentucky (1957-59), Associate Professor and Professor of History at the University of Michigan (1959-74), Department Chair (1972-73), University Faculty Chair (1970-71), William Rand Kenan, Jr., Professor of History at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (1974-99), and Acting Department Chair (1989-90). He has been Emeritus Professor of History since 1999. He also continues in his role as a member of the Board of Directors of the World War II Studies Association, a position he has held since 1968, and as a member of the Board of Editors of the Journal of Intelligence History, a position he has held since 2001. Lastly, he serves as a counselor to the National World War II Museum. In addition to the above roles, Dr. Weinberg was Vice-President for Research of the American Historical Association (1982-84), Consultant to the Committee on War Documents of the American Historical Association (1957-59), American Historical Association representative on the Joint AHA-OAH-SAA Committee on Historians and Archives (1972-76), member of the Executive Committee of the German Studies Association (1989-1992), Vice-President (1994-96) and President (1996-98). Additionally, he served as Chairman of the National Archives Liaison Committee of the Conference Group for Central European History of the American Historical Association (1969-90), Chairman of the Conference Group for Central European History of the American Historical Association (1982-83), past member of the Board of Editors of the Journal of Modern History, and Central European History, a member of the Board of Editors of the International History Review (1991-2000), Vice-Chairman of the European History Section of the Southern Historical Association (1988), Chairman (1989), Chair of the Moncado Prize Committee of the Society for Military History (2012-14), member of the United States Air Force Historical Advisory Committee (1987-90), Consultant to the United States Holocaust Memorial Council (1992), member of the Department of Defense's Historical Records Declassification Advisory Panel, (1995-2002), member of the United States Army Historical Advisory Committee (1996-98), Chairman, (1998-2003), Chairman of the Historical Advisory Panel of the Interagency Working Group Implementing the Nazi War Crimes Disclosure and Imperial Japanese Records Act (1999-2007), member of the US Army Training and Doctrine Command Military History Council (1999-2001) and Convener of Presidential Counselors for The National World War II Museum (2006-8). In recognition of his historical writings and career achievements, he received the George Louis Beer Prize of the American Historical Association in 1971 for his book The Foreign Policy of Hitler's Germany, 1933-1936, the Halverson Prize of the German Studies Association in 1981 for his book The Foreign Policy of Hitler's Germany, 1937-1939, and another George Louis Beer Prize of the American Historical Association. Dr. Weinberg was also honored with the Distinguished Book Award of the Society for Military History, and the 1994 Herbert Hoover Book Award of the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library Association in 1995 for his book A World at Arms: A Global History of World War II. A member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences since 1996, Dr. Weinberg received the Order of Merit First Class of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1999, the Pritzker Military Library Award for Lifetime Achievement in Military History in 2009, the Samuel Eliot Morison Award for Lifetime Achievement of the Society for Military History in 2011, and the Spencer-Tucker Award for publications in military history of ABC-Clio in 2012. The Holocaust Educational Foundation presented him with the Lifetime Contribution to the Field Award in 2016. Dr. Weinberg was the recipient of a Rockefeller Foundation and SSRC Fellowship (1962-63), ACLS Fellowship (1965-66) and Guggenheim Fellowship (197l-72). He was a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellow (1978-79), Fulbright Professor at Bonn University (1983), Visiting Professor at the U.S. Air Force Academy (1990-91) and Shapiro Senior Scholar in Residence at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum (2001-2). He received a Doctor of Humane Letters, h.c. from the University at Albany in May 1989 and a Doctor of Philosophy, h.c. from the University of Hanover in March 2001. In addition to his status as a Marquis Who's Who Lifetime Achiever, Dr. Weinberg has also been featured in a number of Marquis publications, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the South and Southwest and Who's Who in the World.
