Dr. Weinberg was also honored with the Distinguished Book Award of the Society for Military History, and the 1994 Herbert Hoover Book Award of the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library Association in 1995 for his book A World at Arms: A Global History of World War II. A member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences since 1996, Dr. Weinberg received the Order of Merit First Class of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1999, the Pritzker Military Library Award for Lifetime Achievement in Military History in 2009, the Samuel Eliot Morison Award for Lifetime Achievement of the Society for Military History in 2011, and the Spencer-Tucker Award for publications in military history of ABC-Clio in 2012. The Holocaust Educational Foundation presented him with the Lifetime Contribution to the Field Award in 2016. Dr. Weinberg was the recipient of a Rockefeller Foundation and SSRC Fellowship (1962-63), ACLS Fellowship (1965-66) and Guggenheim Fellowship (197l-72). He was a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellow (1978-79), Fulbright Professor at Bonn University (1983), Visiting Professor at the U.S. Air Force Academy (1990-91) and Shapiro Senior Scholar in Residence at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum (2001-2). He received a Doctor of Humane Letters, h.c. from the University at Albany in May 1989 and a Doctor of Philosophy, h.c. from the University of Hanover in March 2001.
