John Sandford Biography
John Sandford is the pen name of John Roswell Camp, a Pulitzer Prize-winning American journalist and crime fiction author. After earning degrees in history, literature, and journalism from the University of Iowa, Camp began his writing career as a reporter at The Miami Herald and later at Saint Paul Pioneer Press. He received recognition for in-depth series on Native American communities and American farm life. During the Midwest farm crisis, he embedded with a southwest Minnesota family for a year, producing the series "Life on the Land: An American Farm Family," which earned the American Society of Newspaper Editors Distinguished Writing Award and the Pulitzer Prize for Feature Writing.
Sandford's transition to crime fiction began with the publication of "Rules of Prey," which launched the Prey series. This series, spanning more than 30 books, follows Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension investigator Lucas Davenport as he handles high-profile cases. The novels are known for their character development, tense pacing, and authentic depictions of law enforcement and criminal investigations, often set in the Midwest. Camp has authored 40 published novels, all of which have appeared on the New York Times bestseller lists.
Sandford also created the Virgil Flowers series, featuring a perceptive Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension investigator who first appeared in the Prey novels. The Virgil Flowers series includes 12 books, beginning with "Heat Lightning" and ending with "Bloody Genius." The universe expanded to include further spin-offs and crossovers, notably featuring Letty Davenport, Lucas Davenport's daughter, who stars in her own series. Sandford is co-author of three young-adult books in the Singular Menace series with Michele Cook and co-author of the science-fiction thriller "Saturn Run" with Ctein. His books have been translated into numerous European and Middle Eastern languages, as well as Japanese and Korean.
Sandford's work has been recognized with several honors, including the International Thriller Writers Award for Thrillermaster and the International Thriller Writers Award for Best Hardcover Novel for "Bad Blood." The Mystery Writers of America named Sandford a Grand Master, an honor that acknowledges significant contributions to the mystery genre. With a career that bridges investigative journalism and bestselling fiction, Sandford is recognized for his authentic approach to crime writing and his enduring presence in the field.
