Crystal Dangerfield Biography
Crystal Dangerfield is a professional basketball player known for her progression through high school, college, and the WNBA. After a standout high school career, Dangerfield was recognized as the nation's top-ranked point guard, leading her team to two state championships and earning honors such as Miss Basketball Tennessee, Tennessee Gatorade Player of the Year, McDonald's All-American, and Morgan Wootten National Player of the Year.
Dangerfield played college basketball for the University of Connecticut Huskies, where she developed into one of the program's accomplished guards. She spent four years at Connecticut under coach Geno Auriemma, finishing her career with 1,480 points and 599 assists, ranking fifth in program history for assists. The Huskies achieved a 136-8 record during her tenure and reached the Final Four in each of her first three seasons. Dangerfield received multiple All-American Athletic Conference honors, including selections to the AAC All-Freshman Team, All-Tournament Teams, and two First Team All-AAC honors.
Dangerfield was selected 16th overall in the WNBA Draft and became the first second-round pick to earn Rookie of the Year honors in league history. She started 19 of 21 games in her debut season, averaging 30 minutes per game, and led the Minnesota Lynx in scoring at 16.2 points and assists at 3.6 per game, while shooting 47 percent from the field and 92 percent from the free throw line. She scored in double figures in 19 of 21 games, including a season-high 29 points, and finished the season with eight 20-point games. Dangerfield was named to the AP All-Rookie Team and received WNBA Rookie of the Year, Associated Press Rookie of the Year, and ESPN Rookie of the Year honors.
She is the sixth former Connecticut player to earn WNBA Rookie of the Year, joining Diana Taurasi, Tina Charles, Maya Moore, Breanna Stewart, and Napheesa Collier. Dangerfield's role increased for the Lynx following an injury to center Sylvia Fowles, highlighting her ability to contribute under pressure and lead the team's offense. Since her rookie season, Dangerfield has continued her professional basketball career with multiple WNBA teams and internationally, earning an Israeli championship and competing in leagues across Europe and the Middle East. Her journey from a second-round draft pick to a league award winner demonstrates perseverance and high-level performance in women's basketball.
