Clay Marzo Biography
Clay Marzo is an American professional surfer recognized for his distinctive approach and technical innovation in the sport of surfing. Known for his unique double-jointed style of turns and spins, Marzo has drawn attention within the surfing community for a fluid and daring technique that challenges conventional expectations. Former world champion Mark Occhilupo has described Marzo as one of the best surfers in the world and a leader in progressive surfing.
Marzo began competing at a young age, winning the 200-meter freestyle event at the Hawaii State Swimming Championships at age 10. At 11, he placed third at the National Scholastic Surfing Association Nationals competition and signed a professional contract with Quiksilver. At 15, Marzo became the first surfer to receive two perfect 10s in NSSA history and won the NSSA National title, later becoming the NSSA Open Men's National Champion. His achievements include an X Games gold medal, top finishes at the World Surf League's World Qualifying Series, and nominations for Maneuver of the Year at the Surfer Poll Awards and Water Man of the Year.
Marzo was diagnosed with Asperger syndrome, a form of autism spectrum disorder, which provided insight into his focused and dedicated approach to surfing. His intense connection to water and singular focus have been central to his career, often leading him to surf for extended periods. While he has faced challenges in social settings, his commitment to surfing has remained unwavering.

The documentary "Clay Marzo: Just Add Water," directed by Jamie Tierney and Strider Wasilewski, explores his life as a surfer and his experience with Asperger syndrome. Marzo also co-authored a memoir titled "Just Add Water," chronicling his journey in professional surfing and his experiences with neurodiversity.
Marzo volunteers with Surfers Healing, a nonprofit organization that provides surfing experiences for children with autism spectrum disorder in the United States and Canada.
