Tyler Farnham Biography
Tyler Farnham is a world traveler, international lifeguard, published author, and motivational speaker known for his story of survival and reinvention. While working as a lifeguard captain, Farnham experienced a near-fatal skydiving accident that significantly altered the course of his life. A parachute malfunction led to an uncontrolled fall from 13,000 feet, resulting in extensive injuries and a lengthy rehabilitation process. He sustained a broken left femur, fractures in his right arm, shattered condyles, a fractured mandible, multiple broken teeth, a fractured skull, and a concussion. Farnham awoke after five days in a medically induced coma on his 26th birthday.
The recovery process tested Farnham's resilience. Confined to a wheelchair with metal rods in his legs and his mouth wired shut, he faced significant emotional and physical challenges. He relied on opioid painkillers to manage pain during therapy sessions, eventually confronting addiction. Farnham made the decision to reclaim his life by distancing himself from negative influences and returning to the ocean, which played a crucial role in his physical and emotional recovery.
As an EMT Ocean Rescue Captain, Farnham's rehabilitation included regaining the physical fitness required to pass rigorous tests and return to active duty. He contributed to the revision of Standard Operating Procedures for Brevard County Ocean Rescue and received recognition as Lifeguard of the Year and a lifesaving valor award. On his first day back at work, he and his team resuscitated a surfer who suffered a neck injury.
Farnham documented his recovery in the book "Reaching Cloud 9" and later wrote a follow-up, "Journals from Cloud 9," detailing his experiences with injury, addiction, and personal growth. He left his full-time position as an Ocean Rescue Captain, traveled internationally, and worked as a lifeguard and surf coach in the United States, Australia, New Zealand, China, the United Kingdom, and Indonesia. Farnham also led a team of Indonesian watermen at Nihi Resort on the island of Sumba, recognized by Travel and Leisure as one of the world's top hotels.
