Chris Jordan Biography
Chris Jordan is an American photographer, filmmaker, and environmental activist recognized for his contributions to the global conversation on mass consumption and ecological responsibility. After a decade as a corporate lawyer, Jordan transitioned to photography, focusing his creative efforts on conservation and environmental activism.
Jordan gained recognition for his large-scale color photographs documenting the remnants of American consumer culture in the series "Intolerable Beauty: Portraits of American Mass Consumption." This work features images from landfills and recycling centers, depicting discarded products such as cell phones, chargers, circuit boards, crushed cars, and glass bottles. These photographs present visually striking abstractions that highlight the environmental impact of consumer waste.
Building on this foundation, Jordan developed the project "Running the Numbers: An American Self-Portrait," which further established his reputation in environmental photography and social change. His book "In Katrina's Wake: Portraits of Loss from an Unnatural Disaster" examines the aftermath of the hurricane, documenting its environmental and human toll.
Jordan's work includes a series of photographs and a film inspired by environmental tragedy on a remote atoll in the North Pacific Ocean, where he documented the deaths of thousands of young albatrosses with stomachs filled with plastic. His photo series "Midway: Message from the Gyre" and the film "Albatross" explore the intersection of environmental beauty and imbalance.
Jordan has received the Prix Pictet, a global award in photography and sustainability, and the Green Leaf Award from the United Nations Environmental Programme, presented at the Nobel Peace Center in Oslo. The "Running the Numbers" series was a finalist for the Darmstadt Photographic Prize in Germany and the Green Prix Award in the United States.
