Cheryl Tiegs Biography
Cheryl Tiegs is recognized as America's first supermodel, noted for her influence on the fashion industry and her impact on modeling business practices. After appearing in several television commercials, Tiegs secured her first professional modeling assignment on the cover of Glamour magazine at age 17. Her career gained momentum with multiple appearances in the "Sports Illustrated" Swimsuit Issue, including three cover features, making her the first model to appear on the publication's swimsuit cover three times. Tiegs also appeared on the cover of TIME magazine with the caption "All-American Model," and her "Pink Bikini" poster became a significant image in 1970s pop culture, selling millions of copies.
Within the modeling industry, Tiegs advanced the profession through strategic business decisions, including a $1.5 million exclusive contract with Cover Girl Cosmetics, which set new standards for endorsement deals. She was a pioneer of celebrity-endorsed clothing lines, appearing again on the cover of TIME magazine with the headline "Sassy Sears — Toasters and Tires and Cheryl Tiegs." The Cheryl Tiegs Collection at Sears, which featured sportswear, nightwear, loungewear, intimate apparel, and hosiery, was distributed nationwide and contributed to a substantial increase in Sears' sales. Tiegs was the first supermodel to invest in retail, establishing a model for future collaborations between celebrities and brands.
Tiegs authored the book "The Way to Natural Beauty," establishing her as a voice in health, wellness, and style. She was named the first MAC Fashion Icon and served as a judge on the reality series "True Beauty" alongside Vanessa Minnillo and Carson Kressley. Tiegs made guest appearances as herself on the animated series "Family Guy" and participated in "The Celebrity Apprentice."
As a speaker on health, fitness, and environmental issues, Tiegs participated in an Arctic expedition to study the effects of global warming. She appeared on "Living with Ed" on HGTV with Ed Begley Jr. to promote environmentally conscious living and was recognized as Green Star of the Week by Access Hollywood. Tiegs serves on the boards of COACH for Kids and the Earth Conservation Corps and is a spokesperson for City of Hope.
Known as the "All-American Model," Tiegs has maintained a lower profile in recent years after decades of public attention. She attended the Project Angel Food Angel Awards, supporting the organization's mission to provide meals to critically ill individuals in Los Angeles County. Tiegs' career has influenced the modeling and fashion industries, setting standards for future generations of models and entrepreneurs.
