Carolyn Peck Biography
Carolyn Peck is a prominent figure in women's basketball, recognized for her achievements as a player, coach, and broadcaster. As a collegiate athlete at Vanderbilt University, Peck was a 6-foot-4 center who averaged 10.6 points and 5.8 rebounds per game, ranking among the program's all-time leaders in scoring and blocked shots. She contributed to the Commodores' first NCAA Tournament appearance and was later inducted into the Vanderbilt Athletic Hall of Fame.
After playing professionally overseas, Peck began her coaching career as an assistant at Tennessee under Pat Summitt, then moved on to Kentucky and Purdue. As head coach at Purdue, she led the Boilermakers to an NCAA title, guiding the team to a 34-1 record and a victory over Duke, which included a 32-game winning streak. Peck became the first Black head coach to win an NCAA Division I women's basketball national championship and, at age 33, the youngest women's basketball head coach to claim a Division I title. The championship was also the first national title in Big Ten women's basketball history.
Peck received several coaching honors, including the Naismith, Associated Press, WBCA, and USBWA Coach of the Year awards. She was the first woman and first African American to win the Winged Foot Award from the New York Athletic Club, which recognizes the best coach in college basketball. Peck later became the inaugural head coach and general manager of the WNBA's Orlando Miracle, leading the franchise to the WNBA playoffs. She also served as head coach at the University of Florida, where she achieved the program's greatest single-season turnaround.
Transitioning to broadcasting, Peck joined ESPN as a basketball analyst, covering women's college basketball, the WNBA, and men's college basketball for both ESPN and SEC Network. She has appeared on high-profile broadcasts, including the NCAA Women's Final Four Special, providing analysis and insight into the game. Peck was inducted into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame, recognizing her contributions to women's basketball as a coach, broadcaster, and advocate for the sport.
