Carlos Saldanha Biography
Carlos Saldanha is a Brazilian animator, director, producer, and voice actor recognized for his contributions to animated cinema and computer-generated imagery (CGI). Saldanha initially pursued computer science before shifting to animation, studying computer animation at the School of Visual Arts in New York City. He completed the MFA program at the School of Visual Arts, graduating with honors after producing two animated shorts. During his time at SVA, Saldanha met Chris Wedge, co-founder of Blue Sky Studios, who invited him to join the studio's team of artists.
Saldanha began his feature directorial career by co-directing the animated film "Ice Age" with Wedge, a film that achieved significant commercial success. He later co-directed "Robots" and directed "Ice Age: The Meltdown" and "Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs," further expanding the "Ice Age" franchise, which became known for its box office performance and influence on the animation industry.
Seeking a new creative direction, Saldanha directed "Rio," set in his hometown of Rio de Janeiro. He and his animation team traveled to the city to accurately capture its environment and culture, resulting in a film that achieved global box office success. Saldanha continued the story with "Rio 2," further highlighting Brazilian culture in animated storytelling. Throughout his career, Saldanha has emphasized storytelling, emotional resonance, and technological innovation in CGI animation.
Saldanha directed the animated comedy film "Ferdinand," based on the children's book "The Story of Ferdinand" by Munro Leaf and Robert Lawson. The film featured a prominent cast and achieved strong box office results. Saldanha received an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Short Film for "Gone Nutty" and for Best Animated Feature for "Ferdinand." He later made his live-action directorial debut with "Harold and the Purple Crayon," a live-action animated fantasy comedy based on the children's book by Crockett Johnson. Active with 20th Century Animation, Saldanha continues to create animated and live-action films for audiences worldwide.
