Arthur Hayes Biography
Arthur Hayes is an American entrepreneur and derivatives trader recognized for his significant impact on cryptocurrency markets. Hayes earned a degree in economics from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He began his professional career in Hong Kong as an equity derivatives trader at Deutsche Bank and later at Citigroup, gaining experience in leveraged products, market-making, and risk management within electronically traded markets. This background provided a foundation for his later work in digital finance and crypto trading.
Hayes co-founded BitMEX (Bitcoin Mercantile Exchange), which became a leading platform for Bitcoin derivatives by introducing high leverage, advanced order types, and a crypto-native approach to margin and collateral. Alongside his co-founders, Hayes developed the perpetual swap contract, a derivatives instrument with no expiration date that tracks an underlying asset's price through a funding-rate mechanism. The perpetual swap addressed limitations in earlier Bitcoin futures contracts and has since been adopted by major exchanges across the cryptocurrency industry, including Binance, OKX, and Bybit. BitMEX grew into one of the largest virtual currency derivatives exchanges, with average daily trading volumes exceeding $2 billion.
The U.S. Department of Justice charged Hayes and his co-founders with violations of the Bank Secrecy Act for inadequate anti-money laundering controls at BitMEX. Hayes pled guilty to one count of violating the Bank Secrecy Act and received two years of probation and a $10 million fine. Throughout these legal proceedings, Hayes remained an active and influential commentator in the digital asset sector.
After stepping back from BitMEX, Hayes launched Maelstrom, a family office and crypto venture fund. He is widely read for his macroeconomic analysis and cryptocurrency market commentary, which he publishes on his Substack and blog. Hayes' writing, which combines global monetary policy analysis with crypto market insights, attracts a substantial following among traders and investors. He is known for forecasting significant crypto rallies and corrections based on inflation, central bank liquidity, and interest rate trends.
Maelstrom has sought to raise at least $250 million for its first private equity fund, targeting established businesses in the crypto ecosystem such as trading infrastructure providers and analytics platforms. This approach focuses on minimizing market volatility and regulatory risk by investing in profitable off-chain companies rather than token-based projects. In addition to his investment activities, Hayes has contributed to philanthropy, including donations to the Jackie Robinson Foundation and global COVID-19 relief efforts. From developing modern crypto derivatives infrastructure to shaping macroeconomic discussions around digital assets, Hayes continues to be a prominent figure in global finance and cryptocurrency markets.
