Erik Voorhees Biography
Erik Voorhees is a cryptocurrency entrepreneur recognized for his role in the development of Bitcoin and decentralized finance. Voorhees became involved with Bitcoin through the Free State Project, a libertarian initiative focused on individual freedom and limited government. He has advocated for the separation of money and state and is often described as a crypto-libertarian.
Voorhees's early career included co-founding SatoshiDICE, a platform that enabled users to gamble with Bitcoin, which he later sold in one of the first major blockchain business acquisitions. He also served as director of marketing at BitInstant and co-founded Coinapult, a service that facilitated Bitcoin transfers via SMS and email, contributing to the accessibility of cryptocurrency and blockchain technology.
Voorhees is the founder and former CEO of ShapeShift, a digital asset trading platform that emphasized privacy and user autonomy by allowing cryptocurrency trades without account creation or identity verification. ShapeShift promoted a non-custodial exchange model, enabling users to trade digital assets without relying on centralized intermediaries. In response to regulatory changes, Voorhees led the decentralization of ShapeShift, transforming it into a decentralized autonomous organization and transferring governance to holders of its FOX token.
After his tenure at ShapeShift, Voorhees founded Venice AI, a platform that integrates artificial intelligence and blockchain technology. Venice AI operates as a private, open-source competitor to other AI platforms, utilizing a decentralized crypto network to provide secure and anonymous AI interactions without storing user data. This venture reflects Voorhees's ongoing commitment to decentralization and data privacy in both the cryptocurrency and artificial intelligence sectors.
Voorhees has spoken at industry events and appeared on media outlets including Bloomberg, Fox Business, CNBC, and BBC Radio. He frequently participates in interviews and podcasts, offering commentary on decentralized finance, token market structure, and regulatory issues. Voorhees's career demonstrates a consistent focus on building blockchain infrastructure and advocating for financial sovereignty and open networks.
