Annie Lennox Biography
Annie Lennox is a Scottish singer-songwriter, political activist, and philanthropist. After achieving moderate success in the late 1970s as part of the New Wave band The Tourists, she and fellow musician David A. Stewart went on to achieve major international success in the 1980s as Eurythmics. Notably, their 1983 hit single "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)" marked their commercial breakthrough. Lennox is the most recognized female artist at the Brit Awards, having won a total of eight awards.
Lennox embarked on a solo career in 1992 with her debut album, "Diva," which produced several hit singles, including "Why" and "Walking on Broken Glass." She has since released five additional solo studio albums, including the cover album "Medusa" in 1995 and "Songs of Mass Destruction" in 2007. In 2009, she released a compilation album, "The Annie Lennox Collection." To date, she has received numerous accolades for her work, including four Grammy Awards, an MTV Video Music Award, and a Billboard Century Award, the highest accolade from Billboard Magazine.
In addition to her career as a musician, Lennox is also a political and social activist, notably known for raising money and awareness for HIV/AIDS as it affects women and children in Africa. In 2011, Lennox was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II for her "tireless charity campaigns and championing of humanitarian causes." She also founded The SING Campaign in 2007, an organization dedicated to raising funds and awareness for women and children affected by HIV and AIDS.
Lennox's activism extends beyond HIV/AIDS advocacy. She supports the Burma Campaign UK, a non-governmental organization that addresses the suffering in Burma and promotes democratization. Lennox also received the Peace Summit Award in 2009 for her engagement in the fight against HIV in South Africa and was named as a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for AIDS in 2010.
With a contralto vocal range, Lennox has been named "The Greatest White Soul Singer Alive" by VH1. Her music videos have earned regular rotation on MTV since the 1980s, contributing to her significant following within the LGBT community. In 2020, Lennox and her Eurythmics partner Dave Stewart were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and in 2022, they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
