Anne Basting Biography
Anne Basting is a writer, artist, scholar, and gerontologist whose career focuses on harnessing creativity to transform the experience of aging. As Emerita Professor of English at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee and founder of the nonprofit TimeSlips.org, Basting has developed programs that support caregivers in using creative engagement to enhance elder care. Her work addresses aging, memory, and dementia, exploring the roles of theater, storytelling, and the arts in eldercare.
Basting established TimeSlips with the insight that the pressure to remember can hinder connection. The TimeSlips method encourages imagination over memory, using creative prompts to help individuals with memory loss share stories and connect with others. The organization includes more than 900 certified facilitators across 48 states and 20 countries, and its creative engagement practices are integrated into aging care systems such as Meals on Wheels, libraries, home care companies, senior centers, memory cafes, adult day programs, and long-term care facilities.
Basting is author and editor of numerous articles and four books, including "Creative Care," "The Penelope Project," and "Forget Memory." She has also written and produced nearly a dozen plays and public performances, such as "Slightly Bigger Women" and "Finding Penelope." Her work as founding director of University of Wisconsin Milwaukee's Center for Age and Community was featured in the PBS documentary "The Penelope Project."
Basting has been recognized as a MacArthur Fellow and has received an Ashoka Fellowship, Rockefeller Fellowship, Brookdale National Fellowship, The Randy Martin Spirit Award, and major grants in both the arts and social services. Her contributions to creative aging and dementia care have been acknowledged through her distinction as UW-Milwaukee's first MacArthur Fellow. Basting has delivered a TEDMED Talk titled "How to meaningfully reconnect with those who have dementia," and her work has appeared in outlets including the New York Times. Her writing and public performances have contributed to an international movement promoting creative expression throughout the lifespan, including in late life.
