Dr. Dean Ornish Biography
Dr. Dean Ornish is recognized for his contributions to lifestyle medicine, a field he has advanced through scientific research and clinical practice. Ornish is the founder and president of the nonprofit Preventive Medicine Research Institute and serves as clinical professor of medicine at the University of California, San Francisco. He completed medical training in internal medicine at Baylor College of Medicine, Harvard Medical School, and Massachusetts General Hospital. Ornish’s career centers on demonstrating the body’s capacity for self-healing under optimal conditions.
Ornish has led research showing that lifestyle changes can reverse the progression of common chronic diseases and influence cellular aging. He directed the first randomized controlled trial indicating that comprehensive lifestyle modifications may halt or reverse early-stage prostate cancer. His studies have also shown that such changes can affect gene expression, activating genes that prevent disease and deactivating those that promote cancer and heart disease. In collaboration with Dr. Elizabeth Blackburn, Ornish’s research demonstrated increased telomerase activity, which is associated with telomere lengthening and cellular aging.
Ornish’s work extends to cognitive health. Research conducted at the Preventive Medicine Research Institute found that intensive lifestyle interventions, including a whole-food, plant-based diet, can improve cognition and halt the progression of Alzheimer’s disease. Using the Clinical Global Impression of Change, the study reported that 42 percent of patients showed significant cognitive improvement, and 71 percent experienced stabilization or improvement in cognition after 20 weeks. This trial, published in a peer-reviewed Alzheimer’s journal, expanded the scope of Ornish’s research in preventive medicine.
Ornish is the author of six national bestselling books, including "Dr. Dean Ornish's Program for Reversing Heart Disease," "Eat More, Weigh Less," "Love & Survival," "The Spectrum," and "UnDo It!" His research has appeared in medical journals such as Journal of the American Medical Association, The Lancet, and The New England Journal of Medicine. Ornish’s work has been featured in major media, including cover stories in Newsweek, Time, and U.S. News & World Report. He has been recognized by Life magazine and Forbes magazine for his influence in medicine and education.
Ornish has received appointments to the White House Commission on the Complementary and Alternative Medicine Policy and the White House Advisory Group on Prevention, Health Promotion, and Integrative and Public Health. His honors include the University of California, Berkeley National Public Health Hero Award, the Jan J.
