Bill T. Jones Biography
Bill T. Jones, known formally as William Tass Jones, is a choreographer, director, author, and dancer recognized for his influential work in modern dance and performing arts. Jones co-founded the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company, which became known for innovative choreography that integrates spoken text, visual imagery, and collaborations with visual artists and musicians. The company’s performances address issues of race and sexuality and have featured costumes by Willi Smith and sets by Keith Haring, reflecting a commitment to interdisciplinary artistry.
Jones has created more than 140 works for his company and has been commissioned by leading dance organizations, including Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Boston Ballet, Lyon Opera Ballet, and Berlin Opera Ballet. Following the death of his partner Arnie Zane, Jones produced works such as "Last Supper at Uncle Tom's Cabin/The Promised Land" and "Still/Here." The latter, developed during the AIDS epidemic, incorporates elements from Survival Workshops with individuals living with life-threatening illness, blending spoken word, video, and movement in a multimedia structure. The New York Times described "Still/Here" as an American classic.
Jones’s contributions extend to Broadway, where he earned Tony Awards for Best Choreography for "FELA!" and "Spring Awakening," as well as an Obie Award for the off-Broadway run of "Spring Awakening." His trilogy exploring trauma and memory includes "Analogy/Dora: Tramontane," "Analogy/Lance: Pretty aka the Escape Artist," and "Analogy/Ambros: The Emigrant."
Jones has received numerous honors, including a MacArthur Fellowship, two Tony Awards, a Kennedy Center Honor, induction into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the Doris Duke Performing Artist Award. He was named Officier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French government and recognized as one of America's Irreplaceable Dance Treasures by the Dance Heritage Coalition. Jones holds honorary doctorate degrees from institutions such as Yale University, the Art Institute of Chicago, Bard College, Columbia College, Skidmore College, the Juilliard School, and Swarthmore College.
Jones serves as artistic director of New York Live Arts, overseeing an annual presenting season and educational programming. His creative output includes the solo work "Memory Piece: Mr. Ailey, Alvin… the un-Ailey?" performed in conjunction with the Whitney Museum of American Art's exhibition "Edges of Ailey." Jones’s reimagined version of "Still/Here" continues to address themes of illness, resilience, and identity, with the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company maintaining a national touring presence. Through movement, memory, and storytelling, Jones explores the complexities of the human experience in American dance and choreography.
