Andrés Ruzo Biography
Andrés Ruzo is a geothermal scientist, conservationist, science communicator, and educator whose work spans five continents. As a National Geographic Explorer, TED MainStage speaker, TED Book author, and host of the National Geographic Latin America show "Misterios del Inframundo" (Mysteries of the Underworld), Ruzo has developed a career at the intersection of scientific research and environmental advocacy. He holds degrees in geology and finance from Southern Methodist University and pursued a Ph.D. in geophysics. Ruzo has received multiple National Geographic Young Explorer Grants.
During research for a National Geographic Society-funded project, Ruzo investigated a childhood legend from Lima about a mysterious river that boiled in the jungle. His work at the Boiling River of the Amazon in Peru led him to become the first geoscientist granted the shamanic blessing to study this sacred site. Ruzo identified the Shanay-timpishka, known as the Boiling River of the Amazon, where water temperatures can exceed 95°C (203°F). This site, sacred to Indigenous communities, raises significant scientific questions about geothermal activity far from volcanic centers. Much of Ruzo's work focuses on integrating traditional Indigenous knowledge with modern Western science.
Ruzo founded and directs the Boiling River Project, a nonprofit organization that combines science, art, traditional knowledge, and interdisciplinary education, collaborating with more than 50 contributors from over 20 countries. His business work centers on energy and project finance, with an emphasis on developing sustainable economic systems to support Amazonian conservation. Ruzo also engages in Indigenous and local empowerment initiatives in the Central Peruvian Amazon through educational and sustainable economic programs. He is the author of the TED Book "The Boiling River: Adventure and Discovery in the Amazon."
Ruzo's work has been recognized by the Explorers Club, where he is an EC50 Fellow, Flag Expedition Leader, and Lowell Thomas Award recipient, as well as by conservation organizations such as Greenpeace and Rolex. He has served as an ambassador for National Geographic project partnerships and initiatives, including collaborations with LEGO, Coors Light, and BMW, and has delivered keynote addresses at more than 300 National Geographic events. Ruzo incorporates educational components into all his projects, working with primary through higher education groups through talks, workshops, and short courses, and contributes to National Geographic Learning educational materials. Through his science communication and research, Ruzo encourages audiences to reconsider humanity's relationship with the natural world.
