Yvonne van Amerongen Biography
Yvonne van Amerongen is a dementia care advocate and healthcare leader whose work has influenced approaches to caring for individuals with severe dementia. An occupational therapist and social worker by training, van Amerongen began her career in psychiatric hospitals and rehabilitation centers before focusing on elder care. She joined the nursing home Hogewey, where she later served as care manager, contributing to a shift in the vision for dementia care.
In the early 1990s, van Amerongen and a team of caregivers began developing a care facility model that allowed residents to participate in daily life activities similar to those they experienced prior to requiring care. This led to the creation of the Hogeweyk, often called the "dementia village," which challenges traditional nursing home models by offering a secure and familiar environment that mirrors everyday life. The Hogeweyk features streets, parks, a grocery store, and homes designed to reflect various lifestyles, supporting more than 170 seniors and enabling residents to maintain a sense of purpose and routine.
Van Amerongen served as project leader and was instrumental in establishing the Hogeweyk's approach to care, living, and well-being for people with severe dementia. She also held the position of Head of Quality and Innovation at Hogewey and contributed to the development of its internationally recognized small-scale living model. Van Amerongen has emphasized the importance of understanding individual needs and preferences in dementia care and creating environments that foster social interaction, physical activity, and emotional well-being. She has also worked as a consultant for Be Advice, advising healthcare organizations, governments, and architects on improving quality of life for people living with dementia.
Her work at the Hogeweyk has influenced dementia care practices globally, inspiring similar projects in Europe, North America, and other regions. Van Amerongen has received multiple awards for her contributions. She delivered a talk titled "The 'dementia village' that's redefining elder care" at TEDWomen, which has reached a wide audience. She has also presented at the Congress on Brain, Behavior and Emotions in Rio de Janeiro and appeared on the TED Radio Hour episode "Take Care," sharing insights on dementia care innovation.
Van Amerongen's career in dementia care spans nearly four decades, and her work continues to influence healthcare professionals and caregivers worldwide. Her approach encourages the development of dementia care models that prioritize respect, empathy, and the belief in meaningful lives for individuals with cognitive challenges.
