Wilson Cruz Biography
Wilson Cruz is an actor, producer, activist, and singer recognized for his contributions to LGBTQ+ visibility in television and film. Cruz was cast as Enrique Vasquez, a gay teenager, in the TV series "My So-Called Life," becoming the first openly gay actor to portray an openly gay character in a leading role on American television. Drawing from personal experiences with bullying and homelessness during high school, Cruz brought authenticity to the role, which resonated with audiences and contributed to national conversations about LGBTQ+ representation.
The series received attention for its realistic depiction of teenage life, and Cruz's performance earned a nomination for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series from Viewers for Quality Television. On stage, Cruz starred as Angel in the West Coast premiere of the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning musical "Rent," earning The Ovation and Drama-Logue awards, and later reprised the role on Broadway. Cruz's film and television credits include "Nixon," "Party of Five," "He's Just Not That Into You," "Shameless," and "13 Reasons Why."
Throughout his acting career, Cruz has continued to advocate for LGBTQ+ visibility, notably on "Star Trek: Discovery" as part of the first televised same-sex couple in the Star Trek universe. He appeared as a recurring guest star in the first season and was later promoted to regular cast member, completing five seasons with the show. Cruz also executive produced the Apple TV+ documentary series "Visible: Out On Television," which explores the influence of television on American culture and the impact of the LGBTQ movement on the medium.
Beyond his screen work, Cruz has served as a board member and national spokesperson for GLAAD and as a field organizer for the National Gay & Lesbian Task Force. He joined Glisten, formerly known as GLSEN, as chair of its board of directors, supporting efforts to make K-12 schools safer for LGBTQ+ students by addressing discrimination, harassment, and bullying. Cruz has received the Vito Russo Award from GLAAD and the Make a Difference Award from the Matthew Shepard Foundation, reflecting his ongoing advocacy for inclusion and representation in the entertainment industry and beyond.
