Alex Newell Biography
Alex Newell is an actor and singer recognized for their vocal range and stage presence in the entertainment industry. Newell gained national attention after appearing as a runner-up on The Glee Project, which led to a role on the Fox musical series "Glee." Portraying Unique Adams in 43 episodes, Newell brought visibility to LGBTQ+ representation on network television. Without formal voice training prior to "Glee," Newell has cited Donna Summer, Sylvester, Diana Ross, Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan, and Beyoncé as musical influences.
Expanding into music, Newell collaborated with Nile Rodgers and The Knocks, and achieved Top 10 singles in the United Kingdom with Clean Bandit and Blonde on "Stronger" and "All Cried Out." Newell released the debut EP "POWER" and starred as Mo on the NBC series "Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist," showcasing versatility in both drama and comedy.
On Broadway, Newell played Asaka in the revival of "Once On This Island," earning a Grammy nomination for Best Musical Theater Album and contributing to the production's Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical. Newell continued to build a Broadway presence with "Shucked," becoming the first openly nonbinary actor to win a Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical for the role of Lulu. The performance of the song "Independently Owned" received critical acclaim.
Newell is a Drama Desk Award winner and recipient of the Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Featured Performer in a Broadway Musical. Newell was named Time Breakthrough Person of the Year. Additional stage credits include joining the cast of "Chicago" as Matron Mama Morton. Newell supports LGBTQ+ youth through benefit concerts for organizations such as The Trevor Project, Human Rights Campaign, and Jack Antonoff's Ally Coalition. Newell continues to contribute to the music industry with singles like "Tell Me Why," a collaboration with house music producer and DJ Cole Dow Jones, while maintaining a presence in theater and television.
