Wally Lamb Biography
Wally Lamb is a New York Times bestselling author known for fiction that explores psychological depth and emotional complexity. A Connecticut native, Lamb holds bachelor's and master's degrees in teaching from the University of Connecticut and a Master of Fine Arts in writing from Vermont College. He began writing fiction during his career as a high school English teacher at Norwich Free Academy and later taught writing at the University of Connecticut, where he directed the English Department's creative writing program.
Lamb's first two novels, "She's Come Undone" and "I Know This Much Is True," reached No. 1 on the New York Times bestseller list, were named New York Times Notable Books of the Year, and were selected for Oprah's Book Club. "I Know This Much Is True" was adapted as a six-episode series for HBO. Lamb has also published short stories, including "Astronauts," which received the Pushcart Prize and the University of Missouri's William Peden Prize.
Lamb is the author of seven New York Times bestselling novels: "The River Is Waiting," "I'll Take You There," "We Are Water," "Wishin' and Hopin'," "The Hour I First Believed," "I Know This Much Is True," and "She's Come Undone." "The Hour I First Believed" examines chaos theory and connects generations of a fictional Connecticut family with significant American events, including the Civil War, the Columbine High School shootings, the Iraq War, and Hurricane Katrina. "The River Is Waiting" follows a young father confronting tragedy and searching for hope and forgiveness, and was selected for Oprah's Book Club.
Lamb also edited "Couldn't Keep It to Myself" and "I'll Fly Away," collections of essays by students in his writing workshop at York Correctional Institution, a women's prison in Connecticut, where he volunteered as a facilitator for two decades. His work in amplifying marginalized voices aligns with the themes of empathy and moral inquiry present in his fiction. Lamb has stated that he writes to move beyond his own experiences and to better understand the lives of others.
Lamb's honors include a National Endowment for the Arts grant, the Connecticut Center for the Book Lifetime Achievement Award, the Connecticut Bar Association Distinguished Public Service Award, the Barnes and Noble Writers for Writers Award, the National Institute of Business/Apple Computers Thanks To Teachers award, and the Arts and Letters Award from the YMCA of New York City. He received the New England Book Award for fiction, and "I Know This Much Is True" won the Friends of the Library USA Readers' Choice Award for best novel and the Kenneth Johnson Memorial Book Award for its contribution to the anti-stigmatization of mental illness. Lamb's work continues to influence contemporary American literature and discussions around mental health, trauma, and family dynamics.
