Vittorio Storaro Biography
Vittorio Storaro is an Italian cinematographer known for his significant contributions to the art of cinematography and visual storytelling in film. Over a career spanning more than five decades, Storaro has collaborated with directors such as Bernardo Bertolucci, Francis Ford Coppola, Warren Beatty, Woody Allen, and Carlos Saura. He has received three Academy Awards for Best Cinematography, a BAFTA Film Award for Best Cinematography, a Primetime Emmy Award, a Goya Award, a David di Donatello Silver Ribbon Award, and numerous lifetime achievement honors from film organizations.
Storaro began studying photography at age 11 and later attended the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia in Italy. His film debut came with "Giovinezza giovinezza," directed by Franco Rossi. Early in his career, he established a long-term collaboration with Bertolucci, beginning with "The Conformist." Storaro's first American film was "Apocalypse Now," directed by Coppola, for which he won an Academy Award. He earned additional Oscars for his work on "Reds" and "The Last Emperor," and received a nomination for "Dick Tracy." Storaro has worked extensively with Bertolucci, shooting eight films together, including "Last Tango in Paris," "1900," and "The Last Emperor." He has won or been nominated for more than 75 awards, including two Emmy statuettes, four BAFTAs, and the Cannes Technical Grand Prize. He was also the youngest recipient of the American Society of Cinematographers' Achievement Award.
Storaro's approach to cinematography is rooted in a philosophical exploration of light and color, drawing inspiration from Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's theory of colors and its psychological effects. His distinctive use of color palettes and expressive lighting has become a hallmark of his visual style. Storaro has shared his insights and experiences in master classes, including at the New York Film Festival, where he discussed his pursuit of balance between light and shadow.
In addition to his work in film, Storaro has authored a multi-volume series titled "Writing with Light," in which he outlines his philosophy of light, color, and visual composition. The series includes a fourth volume, "The Muses," where he continues to explore his interpretation of the visual arts. Storaro's career and body of work have played a pivotal role in shaping the visual language of modern cinema, establishing him as a leading figure in the field of cinematography.
