Zanele Muholi Biography
Zanele Muholi is a South African visual activist, photographer, and humanitarian whose work has influenced conversations around race, gender, and sexuality in contemporary art. Muholi's mission is to re-write a Black queer and trans visual history of South Africa, documenting resistance and existence amid hate crimes in South Africa and beyond. Working across photography, video, and installation, Muholi's practice documents and highlights the lives of South Africa's Black lesbian, gay, transgender, and intersex communities, with a body of work spanning decades. After co-founding the Forum for the Empowerment of Women, Muholi studied at the Market Photo Workshop in Newtown, South Africa, and earned an MFA in documentary media from Ryerson University in Toronto.
Muholi first gained international recognition with the series "Faces and Phases," featuring portraits of women, many from South Africa, that challenge the narrative that homosexuality is un-African. This ongoing visual archive commemorates Black lesbians, transgender, and gender non-conforming individuals, with each participant engaging the viewer directly. Another significant body of work, "Somnyama Ngonyama" ("Hail, the Dark Lioness" in isiZulu), explores labor, racism, and sexual politics through dramatic self-portraits. Muholi has also expanded into sculpture, with bronze works featured in major exhibitions.
Muholi's work has been exhibited at Documenta 13, the South African Pavilion at the Venice Biennale, and the São Paulo Biennale. A retrospective at Tate Modern presented over 300 photographs, showcasing the breadth of Muholi's career and contributions to Black LGBTQ+ visibility in South Africa. Muholi founded the Muholi Art Institute, which focuses on arts education and continues the missions of the Forum for the Empowerment of Women and Inkanyiso, an online platform for queer and visual media.
Muholi has received numerous awards, including the Spectrum International Prize for Photography, the Lucie Award for Humanitarian Photography, the Rees Visionary Award by Amref Health Africa, a fellowship from the Royal Photographic Society, France's Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, the Mbokodo Award in Visual Arts, the ICP Infinity Award for Documentary and Photojournalism, the Prince Claus Award, and the Index on Censorship – Freedom of Expression art award. Muholi was named a Hasselblad Award laureate, becoming the third African and the first Black and queer person to receive this recognition, often referred to as the Nobel Prize of Photography.
In addition to artistic practice, Muholi is an educator and community builder. Muholi founded Inkanyiso, a platform for queer visual media and dialogue, and has supported youth empowerment through initiatives such as Ikhono LaseNatali and PhotoXP, which provide photography training and mentorship. Muholi has been awarded honorary doctorates from the California College of the Arts and the University of Liège, and has served as an honorary professor at the University of the Arts London and the Hochschule für Künste in Bremen, Germany. Through portraiture, sculpture, and educational initiatives, Muholi continues to build an enduring archive of Black queer life.
