Vin Baker Biography
Vin Baker is a former NBA All-Star and assistant coach known for his journey through professional basketball, addiction recovery, and coaching. Baker played college basketball at University of Hartford, where he remains the school's career leader in points and rebounds. He was selected as a first-round, eighth overall pick in the NBA Draft by the Milwaukee Bucks and later won a gold medal with the U.S. Olympic basketball team. Baker was named to the NBA All-Rookie team and became a four-time NBA All-Star, earning All-NBA Third Team and All-NBA Second Team honors.
During his 13-season NBA career, Baker averaged 14.4 points and 7.7 rebounds per game, with his top season producing 21.1 points and 10.3 rebounds per game. He played for the Milwaukee Bucks, Seattle SuperSonics, Boston Celtics, New York Knicks, Houston Rockets, and Los Angeles Clippers. Baker's career was impacted by alcoholism, which affected his performance and financial stability, resulting in significant lost earnings.
Baker documented his experiences in the memoir "God and Starbucks: An NBA Superstar's Journey Through Addiction and Recovery," co-authored with Joe Layden. The book explores the challenges of addiction and the process of rebuilding life after setbacks. After retiring from playing, Baker focused on addiction recovery advocacy, working with rehabilitation organizations and speaking at schools and churches.
He established the Vin Baker Recovery Centers to support individuals facing addiction. Baker returned to the NBA as an assistant coach with the Milwaukee Bucks, contributing to an NBA championship and an NBA Cup championship. He later joined the Miami Heat coaching staff, following his tenure with the Bucks and his work as a broadcaster and analyst. Baker developed a strong professional relationship with Giannis Antetokounmpo during his time in Milwaukee.
University of Hartford awarded Baker a Doctor of Humane Letters degree in recognition of his contributions on and off the court. Baker's story of perseverance and recovery continues to resonate within the basketball community and among those affected by addiction.
