Diana Nyad Biography
Diana Nyad is a long-distance swimmer, author, journalist, and motivational speaker recognized for her significant contributions to endurance sports and sports journalism. Over a decade, Nyad established herself as a leading figure in marathon swimming, setting records in events such as the 22-mile Bay of Naples race and a 28-mile swim around Manhattan Island. She completed a record-breaking swim around Manhattan Island in under eight hours and achieved a 102-mile swim from North Bimini, Bahamas, to Juno Beach, Florida, which stood as the longest ocean swim at the time.
Following her retirement from competitive swimming, Nyad pursued a career in journalism, contributing to NPR, ABC Wide World of Sports, The New York Times, and CBS News Sunday Morning. She is the author of four books: "Other Shores," which explores her life and distance swimming; "Basic Training for Women," a guide to physical fitness; "Boss of Me: The Keyshawn Johnson Story," a biography of NFL wide receiver Keyshawn Johnson; and "Find a Way," which details her attempt to swim across the Florida Straits. Nyad's dual expertise in athletics and journalism has provided her with a unique perspective on endurance, resilience, and the human experience.
Nyad's most notable achievement occurred when she completed a swim from Cuba to Florida after multiple attempts, overcoming obstacles such as asthma attacks, jellyfish stings, and challenging weather conditions. At age 64, she finished the journey in just under 53 hours with the support of a 35-person team. Upon completion, Nyad emphasized perseverance, teamwork, and the importance of pursuing one's goals regardless of age.
Nyad has been inducted into the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame and the National Women's Sports Hall of Fame.
