Having worked with Tyson outside of his public speaking career I feel somewhat capable of determining his authenticity as a motivational speaker. By this I mean, Tyson may motivate from the stage- but it isn't how he leads all interactions in his day to day life. Tyson introduced himself with initial excitement and I looked forward to getting to know him. However, he quickly proved that motivation wasn't infused over every task he encountered. In my case, Tyson decided that "too much fun; too little work." I challenged Tyson on this, saying that work and fun are not mutually exclusive and we should try to maximize both. His response was that the brain can only handle one task at a time, failing to realize that fun is a state of mind and not an action that can distract from a given goal. It seemed to me that a motivational speaker, above all others, would recognize and encourage this. Instead, for Tyson, it was all work all the time.
I'm not saying that Tyson isn't a motivating speaker. I can't pass judgement on his speaking ability since I've never seen him speak. But I can say that from my encounter with Tyson, motivation doesn't guide every aspect of his life. Instead, within 30 minutes of meeting Tyson he passed undue judgement saying essentially that he had me figured out since he 'was me in high school.'
To me, Tyson wasn't encouraging me to reach my full potential, instead he had pre-compartmentalized me. Not exactly a motivating experience.
I can't pretend to speak to Tyson's ability to motivate. I only add this feedback to share an experience I had with Tyson- a Tyson inconsistent with the one perpetuated by his career.

Tyson spoke to all of the Greek organizations on campus, during our Greek Week, and hit several key points about leadership development in a fraternity or sorority. At the time he gave his speech, my pledge brothers and I were inspired to uphold his core values of stewardhsip, leadership, ownership, and membership. Now, as a newly initiated member of my fraternity, I already want to hold a position of leadership and do my part in helping my organization grow and continue to succeed. Tyson's examples and overall life story provides for a great lecture for any organization looking for direction and motives to do great things. Thank you Tyson!

Tyson is amazing! From the first contact, to the follow-up, all the way to the end of his presentation, Tyson provided the ultimate in professionalism and charisma. When we discussed the concept of the program, I could tell that Tyson was truly listening. Other consultants and speakers "humor" their clients, when they already have a "pre-packaged" presentation. Tyson was far from generic and insincere. HE WAS PERFECT!!! We all walked away from his workshop feeling that he hit on every point in a way that the students could relate. Thank you! Thank you!! Thank YOU!!!

Our inservice days had become very dry and uninspiring until Tyson came out to speak to us. It was easily the best inservice we'd had in years. I left feeling challenged, inspired and refreshed without feeling like somebody told me to feel that way. The talk was engaging, entertaining, and replete with Ah Ha! moments. I've also had Tyson speak to my students in the classroom and the students all loved him.
