Tommy John Biography
Thomas Edward John Jr., nicknamed "The Bionic Man," is a former Major League Baseball (MLB) pitcher known for his remarkable 26-season career from 1963 to 1989. He played for six teams, including the Cleveland Indians, Chicago White Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers, and New York Yankees. A four-time All-Star, John won 288 games, the second-most by any pitcher not in the Hall of Fame.
John's legacy extends beyond his longevity; he is best known for undergoing the first successful ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) reconstruction surgery in 1974, now widely known as "Tommy John surgery." His recovery and continued success paved the way for its adoption as a common procedure for pitchers. He had three 20-win seasons post-surgery, led the Dodgers and Yankees to multiple World Series appearances, and remained a key contributor into his mid-40s.
Following his retirement, John spent time as a broadcaster, managed the Bridgeport Bluefish, and became a motivational speaker. He also founded the "Let's Do It" Foundation to raise awareness about suicide prevention.
