Jim Palmer Biography
Jim Palmer is recognized as one of the most accomplished pitchers in Major League Baseball history, known for his consistency and competitive approach. James Alvin Palmer spent his entire 19-year Hall of Fame career with the Baltimore Orioles. Although UCLA offered him a basketball scholarship, Palmer chose to sign with the Orioles. He made his major league debut at age 19 and hit a home run in his first career win. The following season, Palmer became the youngest pitcher in major league history to throw a complete game shutout in the World Series, defeating Dodgers left-hander Sandy Koufax 6-0 in Game 2, contributing to the Orioles' first World Series victory.
Palmer was a leading pitcher in the 1970s, throwing more innings and recording more wins than any other American League pitcher during that decade. With eight seasons of 20 or more wins, Palmer accumulated more victories than any other Major League pitcher of the 1970s. Despite early success, Palmer faced injuries that sidelined him for much of two seasons. He returned to the Orioles' rotation, posting a 16-4 record with a 2.34 ERA.
Palmer finished his career with a record of 268-152, a 2.86 ERA, and 2,212 strikeouts. An eight-time 20-game winner, Palmer led his league in innings pitched four times, wins three times, and ERA twice. He is the only American League Hall of Fame pitcher to win the Cy Young Award three times and also earned four Gold Glove Awards. Palmer became the third pitcher to win three Cy Young Awards, joining Sandy Koufax and Tom Seaver. He helped Baltimore win six American League pennants and three World Series titles and is the only pitcher to win World Series games in each of three decades. Palmer also earned three Sporting News Pitcher of the Year awards.
Palmer was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility, receiving 92.6 percent of the ballots cast by eligible members of the Baseball Writers Association of America. His induction established his legacy as a significant figure in Baltimore sports history.
Palmer began working for ABC Sports while still an active player, providing color commentary during several postseasons and the 1981 World Series, and continued this work after his playing career. He worked a total of five World Series and several All-Star Games for ABC, along with other sporting events. After ABC lost its national baseball contract, Palmer became an announcer for the Orioles, a role he continued for nearly four decades. He is also involved with the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, using his platform to raise awareness and funds for the cause. Palmer has contributed to the fields of pitching, sports broadcasting, and community engagement.
