Tim Gunn is an Emmy Award-winning television personality, fashion industry icon, and New York Times Bestselling author. He became a household name as co-host and mentor for 16 seasons of Lifetime’s "Project Runway," alongside Heidi Klum, and also served as a mentor for the teen designers on "Project Runway: Junior." In 2013, he and Klum won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Host for a Reality or Reality-Competition Program. He continued his television success with appearances on Bravo's "Tim Gunn's Guide to Style," Lifetime's "Under the Gunn," and even made a guest appearance on "How I Met Your Mother" as Barney's personal tailor. He also provided the voice of Baileywick in the Disney Junior television show "Sofia the First" and narrated the sitcom Mixology. The iconic duo of Gunn and Klum reunited to co-create and co-host Amazon’s design competition series, "Making The Cut."
As an accomplished business executive, Gunn served as the Chief Creative Officer at Liz Claiborne, Inc. and Fashion Dean at Fifth & Pacific, where he was responsible for attracting, retaining, and developing the creative talent within their portfolio of brands. He also served on the faculty of Parsons School of Design for 29 years, during which he was chair of fashion design at the school from August 2000 to March 2007.
An outspoken critic of clothing designs using animal fur, Gunn has fought to ban the use of fur in fashion, joining forces with PETA to support fur ban bills in New York City and California. He has played a pivotal role in carving a space for the LGBTQ+ community in the fashion industry and beyond, being named among the fifty heroes "leading the nation toward equality, acceptance, and dignity for all people" by Queerty in June 2020. He even endorsed Christine Quinn's candidacy for Mayor of New York City in the 2013 mayoral election.
A New York Times best-selling author, Gunn has penned five books, including "Tim Gunn: A Guide to Quality, Taste and Style," "Gunn’s Golden Rules: Life’s Little Lessons for Making It Work," and "Tim Gunn’s Fashion Bible: The Fascinating History of Everything in Your Closet." His most recent book, "The Natty Professor: A Master Class on Mentoring, Motivating, and Making It Work!," imparts valuable insights from his personal experiences on themes like truth-telling, empathy, teaching, and learning.
Apart from his television appearances and published literature, Gunn has made his mark in pop culture through various other mediums. He appeared in a backup story in the first issue of Models Inc., a fashion-themed comic book miniseries published by Marvel Comics, participated in the documentary film "Do I Sound Gay?", and even appeared in Kate McKinnon's audio drama "Heads Will Roll."
