Rick Santelli Biography
Rick Santelli is a financial journalist and on-air editor for CNBC Business News, recognized for his analysis in financial media. Santelli began his career as a trader and order-filler at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, working across markets including gold, lumber, certificates of deposit, Treasury bills, foreign currencies, and livestock. He started as a commodity trader and order filler for Drexel Burnham Lambert and advanced to vice president of interest rate futures and options. Before joining CNBC, Santelli served as vice president at Institutional Financial Futures and Options at Sanwa Futures, L.L.C., managing institutional trading and hedge accounts for a range of futures products.
Santelli joined CNBC Business News as an on-air editor, reporting primarily from the floor of the Chicago Board of Trade. His coverage focuses on interest rates, foreign exchange, and the Federal Reserve. Drawing on his trading background, Santelli provides real-time analysis of economic data, futures charts, and policy decisions, contributing depth to CNBC programming. He is a regular contributor to "Squawk on the Street."
Santelli is noted for his role in the early formation of the Tea Party movement following a statement made while reporting from the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. During an on-air segment, he criticized the Homeowners Affordability and Stability Plan, a stimulus package aimed at assisting homeowners facing foreclosure, and called for a Chicago Tea Party. This statement prompted fiscally conservative bloggers and activists to organize a series of Tea Party events, including the Tax Day Tea Party.
Santelli has participated as a panel member in economic leadership forums, including an event hosted by the George Bush Presidential Library Foundation at Texas A&M University. He remains a prominent figure in financial media, known for his direct market perspectives and extensive experience on business networks. Santelli's commentary extends to podcasts, interviews, and conferences, where he discusses central bank policies, market dynamics, and the role of markets in determining interest rates. His decades of trading experience and on-air presence provide audiences with insight into the factors shaping the global economy.

It may take many forms, via many programs; but ultimately it’s the tool of choice at a period in our history where Congress grows more ineffective and financial calamities more frequent.
