Patrick Kennedy Biography
Patrick J. Kennedy is a former U.S. Representative known for his advocacy in mental health and addiction reform. During his tenure in the U.S. House of Representatives, representing Rhode Island's First Congressional District, Kennedy worked to address discrimination against mental illness, addiction, and other brain diseases. He is recognized as the lead sponsor of the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act, a law that requires insurance companies to provide coverage for mental health and substance use disorders on par with physical health conditions.
Kennedy also authored and co-sponsored legislation such as the Positive Aging Act, the Foundations for Learning Act, the National Neurotechnology Initiative Act, the COMBAT PTSD Act, and the Alzheimer's Treatment and Caregiver Support Act. The American Psychological Association honored Kennedy with its Outstanding Leadership Award for his work in advancing professional psychology. Throughout his congressional career, Kennedy was open about his experiences with bipolar disorder and addiction, contributing to efforts to reduce stigma around mental health.
After leaving Congress, Kennedy focused on mental health advocacy and the enforcement of the Federal Parity Law. He founded The Kennedy Forum, a nonprofit organization dedicated to transforming mental health and addiction care by uniting advocates, business leaders, and government agencies to promote evidence-based practices and policies. The book draws inspiration from President John F. Kennedy's "Profiles in Courage" and was recognized by Harvard Public Health Magazine as one of the best public health books of the year.
The Kennedy Forum launched the Alignment for Progress, an initiative to align leaders across industries and political affiliations to improve mental health and substance use disorder screening, treatment access, and recovery outcomes.
