Nury Turkel Biography
Nury Turkel is an attorney, author, and human rights advocate recognized for his expertise in U.S.-China relations and the crisis facing the Uyghur people. He is the first U.S.-educated Uyghur lawyer and the first Uyghur American appointed to a political position in the United States. Born in a re-education camp during China's Cultural Revolution, Turkel spent his early months in detention with his mother before coming to the United States as a student and later receiving asylum. He holds a bachelor's degree from China's Northwest A&F University, as well as a Master of Arts in international relations and a Juris Doctor from American University.
Turkel has worked for more than two decades at the intersection of law, foreign policy, and human rights advocacy. He serves as chairman of the board for the Uyghur Human Rights Project, which he co-founded. Turkel previously served as president of the Uyghur American Association, where he led efforts to raise awareness of the Uyghur people in the United States, including organizing the campaign that achieved the release of prisoner of conscience Rebiya Kadeer. He has testified before the United States Congress and congressional commissions on issues such as Uyghur human rights, forced labor, international religious freedom, digital authoritarianism, supply chain security, and U.S.-China relations. Turkel has also provided testimony in parliaments in Italy, the Czech Republic, Canada, and Taiwan, and has advised European and Asian governments on human rights and trade enforcement.
Turkel served as chair of the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom after being appointed by Congress for two consecutive terms. He has also been a senior fellow at Hudson Institute, focusing on national security, foreign policy, digital authoritarianism, and the impact of technologies such as artificial intelligence on human rights. In his law practice, Turkel specializes in national security law and corporate compliance, including export controls, sanctions, and emerging technology policy. He is a life member of the Council on Foreign Relations and serves as a senior advisor at the Krach Institute for Tech Diplomacy and a senior legal fellow at Notre Dame Law School.
Turkel is the author of "No Escape: The True Story of China's Genocide of the Uyghurs," a memoir that received the Moore Prize for Human Rights Writing. He has published policy-oriented commentaries and op-eds in publications such as Foreign Affairs, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Time, Newsweek, and The Independent. Turkel frequently appears on global media platforms including BBC, NPR, and Al Jazeera.
Turkel has received several recognitions in the field of global human rights. He was named to Time's list of the 100 most influential people in the world and was included among Fortune's 50 Greatest Leaders. He received the inaugural Notre Dame Prize for Religious Liberty and the Global Soul Award by Jewish World Watch.
