Nathan Fielder Biography
Nathan Fielder is a Canadian comedian, writer, director, and producer known for his distinctive approach to television and his contributions to contemporary comedy. Fielder earned a degree in commerce from the University of Victoria before attending the comedy program at Humber College in Toronto, a background that informs his analytical and understated comedic style. Early in his career, he worked as a writer and correspondent on the Canadian satirical news program This Hour Has 22 Minutes, where he developed a persona characterized by social awkwardness and emotional restraint.
Fielder's segment on the series, "Nathan On Your Side," inspired his Comedy Central series "Nathan for You." In "Nathan for You," Fielder played an inept management consultant who devised unconventional strategies to help struggling small businesses, leading to viral moments such as the "Dumb Starbucks" parody café. The show received critical acclaim for its originality and innovative blend of cringe comedy and mockumentary elements, running for four seasons and earning recognition including a Peabody Award.
Fielder later collaborated with HBO, serving as executive producer on "How To with John Wilson" and creating and starring in "The Rehearsal." In "The Rehearsal," Fielder enables participants to prepare for significant life events through meticulously constructed simulations, utilizing actors and elaborate sets. The series received a Film Independent Spirit Award for Best New Non-Scripted or Documentary Series. Fielder also co-created "The Curse" with Benny Safdie for Showtime, a series that explores the impact of a supposed curse on a couple attempting to launch a reality show about philanthropy and environmental housing.
Throughout his career, Fielder has been recognized for his ability to blur the boundaries between documentary and fiction, employing social experiments to examine human behavior. In 2026, he co-directed the Elizabeth Holmes documentary "You Can See Everything." His work has been acknowledged by Time magazine, which named him among the 100 most influential people in the world. Fielder's accolades include a Canadian Comedy Award, a Writers Guild of America Award, a Film Independent Spirit Award, a Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Directing for a Variety Series, and a Directors Guild of America Award nomination for his work on "Who Is America?" Fielder has spoken about his experiences with anxiety, a theme reflected in his television projects, contributing to the authenticity and emotional resonance of his comedy.
