Mitch Prinstein Biography
Dr. Mitch Prinstein is a leading expert in adolescent psychology, specializing in peer relationships, popularity, and mental health. He holds the John Van Seters Distinguished Professor of Psychology and Neuroscience chair and serves as co-director of the Winston Center for Technology and Brain Development at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Prinstein also serves as senior science advisor for the American Psychological Association. For more than 25 years, his research—supported by continuous funding from the National Institutes of Health—has examined interpersonal models of internalizing symptoms and health risk behaviors among adolescents, with a focus on the role of peer relationships in the developmental psychopathology of depression and self-injury.
A board-certified clinical psychologist, Prinstein has published more than 250 scientific manuscripts and 12 books. His widely recognized work, "Popular: Finding Happiness and Success in a World That Cares Too Much About the Wrong Kinds of Relationships," has been translated into multiple languages and distributed globally. Prinstein has authored additional books for both general and professional audiences, including "Great Myths of Adolescence," which addresses misconceptions about adolescent behavior using evidence-based science.
Prinstein leads the Peer Relations Lab, which conducts research on popularity, peer victimization, friendships, and peer influence. His work also investigates the mental health impacts of social media on teens, including the effects of social comparison and susceptibility to negative outcomes.
Prinstein has served as president of the Society for the Science of Clinical Psychology and the Society of Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology, and as editor of the Journal of Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology. He has received national and university-based awards for his research, including the American Psychological Association Society of Clinical Psychology Theodore Blau Early Career Award, the Columbia University/Brickell Award for research on suicidality, and the UNC Chapel Hill Tanner Award for Undergraduate Teaching. At the APA, Prinstein has served as chief science officer and chief of psychology, leading initiatives in science, practice, education, and applied psychology.
