Dexter R. Voisin Biography
Dr. Dexter R. Voisin is a social work scholar, licensed psychotherapist, and academic leader with a career focused on understanding and addressing the root causes of community violence. Voisin serves as the Jack, Joseph, and Morton Mandel Dean in Applied Social Sciences at Case Western Reserve University. With more than 30 years of experience in research, clinical practice, teaching, and academic leadership, he holds a Ph.D. and master's in philosophy from Columbia University and a master's in social work from the University of Michigan.
Before his current role, Voisin was a professor at the University of Chicago School of Social Service Administration, where he directed the STI/HIV Intervention Network and the Chicago Center for HIV Elimination. He was the first person of color to advance from assistant professor to full professor in the school's history. Voisin later served as dean and held the Sandra Rotman Chair in Social Work at the University of Toronto Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work, becoming the first person of color to be appointed dean at that institution.
Voisin's scholarship centers on the impact of structural, neighborhood, and police violence on the life outcomes and behavioral trajectories of urban youth, as well as the protective factors that support resilience amid adversity. His research has documented links between exposure to neighborhood violence and mental health challenges, academic performance, risky peer networks, and behaviors that increase the risk of HIV. Voisin's book, "America the Beautiful and Violent: Black Youth and Neighbourhood Trauma in Chicago," draws on surveys, interviews, and historical data to examine the circumstances contributing to violence in urban communities.
His research addresses structural inequities and health outcomes among minoritized populations and has received more than $16 million in extramural funding. Voisin has authored over 200 peer-reviewed articles, and his work has informed public policy. He is recognized among the top 2% of global scholars in his field.
Voisin is a Fellow of the Society for Social Work and Research and a Fellow and Board Member of the American Academy of Social Work and Social Welfare. He has been reelected as president of the National Association of Deans and Directors of Schools of Social Work, representing more than 200 graduate social work programs across the United States and Canada. Voisin is noted for his contributions to public discourse on race, inequality, and the health of marginalized communities.
