Mike Smith Biography
Mike Smith is a former NFL head coach and defensive specialist whose career in professional football spans nearly four decades, including roles with several prominent franchises. After playing linebacker at East Tennessee State University, where he was named defensive MVP twice, Smith briefly played professionally before transitioning to coaching. He advanced through the college coaching ranks at San Diego State, Morehead State and Tennessee Tech before joining the Baltimore Ravens, where he coached the defensive line and linebackers. During his tenure with the Ravens, Smith contributed to the team's Super Bowl XXXV victory and worked with players such as Ray Lewis, Peter Boulware, Jamie Sharper and Adalius Thomas.
Smith became defensive coordinator for the Jacksonville Jaguars, a position that established his reputation as a leading defensive strategist in the NFL. He later became head coach of the Atlanta Falcons, where he named rookie Matt Ryan as starting quarterback in his first season. Under Smith's leadership, the Falcons secured a playoff berth, marking their first postseason appearance in several years. Smith was recognized with the NFL Coach of the Year Award by the Associated Press in his debut season as head coach.
As head coach of the Falcons, Smith led the team to four playoff appearances in seven seasons, including an NFC Championship Game appearance. He became the first coach in franchise history to achieve back-to-back winning seasons and consecutive playoff berths. Smith guided the Falcons to a 13–3 record and their first postseason win under his leadership, advancing to the NFC Championship Game, which the team hosted for the first time. He also became the franchise's all-time winningest coach by number of victories, reaching 50 wins in 71 games, ranking among the top marks since the AFL-NFL merger.
During his time in Atlanta, Smith was named NFL Coach of the Year by Sporting News multiple times. After 35 seasons of coaching, including 19 in the NFL, Smith served as defensive coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. His career reflects a commitment to defensive strategy, player development and leadership within professional football.
