Micky Ward is a prominent figure in professional boxing, recognized for his determination and resilience in the ring. Before turning professional, Ward was a three-time New England Golden Gloves champion and began his professional career with 14 consecutive wins. After a period of setbacks and a temporary hiatus, Ward returned to boxing, winning nine straight bouts and earning a world title fight. He captured the WBU light welterweight title against Shea Neary.
Ward became known for his powerful left hook to the body and his ability to endure punishment while executing strategic counterattacks. His approach to positioning and pacing, along with his composure during high-pressure exchanges, distinguished him in the sport. Ward's trilogy with Arturo Gatti is widely regarded as one of boxing's most memorable rivalries. His fight against Emanuel Burton was named Fight of the Year by The Ring magazine, and his first bout with Gatti was also recognized as Fight of the Year and referred to as the "Fight of the Century" by boxing commentators, with the ninth round labeled the "Round of the Century." Ward participated in three consecutive Fights of the Year, an achievement that solidified his legacy in boxing history. He retired with a professional record of 38 wins, 13 losses, and 27 knockouts.
Ward's life and career were depicted in the film "The Fighter," in which Mark Wahlberg portrayed him. The film, based on Ward's early career, received an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture.
