Masai Ujiri Biography
Renowned for his role in leading the Toronto Raptors to their first NBA championship in 2019, Masai Ujiri has exhibited a strategic prowess in sports management that has earned him a place in history. As the first African general manager in major American sports, Ujiri's tenure with the Raptors from 2013 to 2025 was marked by consistent playoff appearances, five Division titles, and the best regular season record in the Eastern Conference for the 2017-2018 season. His leadership also encompassed high-profile trades, such as that of DeMar DeRozan for Kawhi Leonard and Danny Green, a move that proved instrumental in securing the NBA championship. Ujiri's innovative approach to team management was recognized in 2013 when he became the only non-American ever to win the NBA Executive of the Year award. In 2026, he expanded to the WNBA and joined the ownership group of the Toronto Tempo, the new WNBA franchise in Toronto.
Apart from his achievements within the NBA, Ujiri has also made significant contributions to the sport in Africa. He founded Giants of Africa in 2003, an organization aimed at identifying and nurturing basketball talent on the continent. In addition, he serves as the director of the NBA's Basketball Without Borders Africa program, which was highlighted in the 2016 documentary film "Giants of Africa". Ujiri's commitment to community development extends beyond the sporting realm, as evidenced by his philanthropic platform "That's Humanity", launched in 2019, and his role in empowerment initiatives for girls in Senegal, which saw him join Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on an official visit to Africa in 2020.
In recognition of his multifaceted contributions to sport and society, Ujiri has been honored with several awards and distinctions. In 2018, he received the first-ever President's Peace Medal from the YMCA of Greater Toronto, and in 2023, he was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada. Through his professional accomplishments and philanthropic endeavors, Ujiri continues to demonstrate the transformative power of sport and the potential for positive change that it holds.
