Maksim Chmerkovskiy Biography
Maksim Chmerkovskiy is a Ukrainian-American Latin ballroom dance champion, choreographer, and instructor recognized for his contributions to the dance industry. Chmerkovskiy began dancing at age 4 and later competed in Ten Dance, which includes both ballroom and Latin styles. As a teenager, he experienced a severe skiing accident that required multiple surgeries and extensive physical therapy, but he returned to competition and established himself as a leading dancer in Ukraine. His competitive achievements include titles at the Yankee Classic Professional Latin Championship, Manhattan Dancesport Professional Latin Championship, and Ohio Star Ball Latin Championship. Chmerkovskiy has also ranked second in the United States and seventh in the world in the International Latin category.
Chmerkovskiy gained national recognition as a professional dancer on "Dancing with the Stars," appearing in 17 seasons and reaching the final round five times. He won the competition with Olympic ice dancer Meryl Davis. As an instructor, he helped his brother Valentin and partner Diana Olonetskaya become the first U.S. dance pair to win a world junior championship. Chmerkovskiy has appeared on television shows including "Why Women Kill," "General Hospital," "Chasing Life," "The Exes," and the Netflix series "Fuller House." He won the sports competition show "The Superstars" and competed on "The Masked Dancer" as Sloth, finishing in second place. Chmerkovskiy has served as a judge on So You Think You Can Dance and was featured on Peacock's "The Traitors."
In live theater, Chmerkovskiy has performed in Broadway productions such as "Burn the Floor" and "Forever Tango." Alongside his brother Val, he co-wrote and co-directed the North American tour "Our Way" and later toured with "Confidential," which included a sold-out performance at Radio City Music Hall.
Chmerkovskiy co-founded Dance With Me dance studios, a network of social dance clubs across the United States focused on dance instruction. He has shared insights from building this dance studio company, launching new ventures, and investing in businesses. Chmerkovskiy also co-founded DanceAndCo, an app providing access to dance, fitness, and entertainment. His career spans dance performance, choreography, television, live theater, and entrepreneurship within the dance industry.
