Judd Nelson is a actor known for his portrayals of complex, rebellious characters in film and television. While technically not a recluse, he leads a very private life.
After studying acting at the Stella Adler Conservatory in New York City, Nelson gained recognition with a starring role in the coming-of-age film "The Breakfast Club," directed by John Hughes. Nelson's performance as John Bender, a cynical and troubled student, contributed to the film's enduring status in pop culture and earned him and his castmates the Silver Bucket of Excellence Award at the MTV Movie Awards.
Nelson's roles in "The Breakfast Club" and Joel Schumacher's "St. Elmo's Fire" established him as a prominent figure in 1980s Hollywood. "St. Elmo's Fire" achieved commercial success and showcased Nelson in a more mature role, further expanding his range. He was associated with the Brat Pack, a group of young actors including Emilio Estevez, Anthony Michael Hall, Rob Lowe, Andrew McCarthy, Demi Moore, Molly Ringwald, and Ally Sheedy, who were influential in shaping the teen film genre during that era.
Continuing to diversify his career, Nelson starred in the Bob Clark comedy "From the Hip" and delivered a notable performance in the courtroom thriller "Billionaire Boys Club," which earned him a Golden Globe Award nomination for Best Actor in a Mini-Series. He also appeared on stage in Chekhov's "The Seagull" at the Los Angeles Theatre Center.
In the 1990s, Nelson took on a starring role in the crime drama "New Jack City," directed by Mario Van Peebles, and appeared in films such as "Airheads" and "Steel." These roles often featured Nelson as a charismatic yet morally ambiguous character, contributing to his reputation in the crime and comedy genres.
Nelson experienced renewed visibility with a main role as Jack Richmond on the NBC sitcom "Suddenly Susan," alongside Brooke Shields. He continued to work in television and film, including appearances in "The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day" and "Billionaire Boys Club." Nelson also reprised his voice role as Hot Rod/Rodimus Prime in the animated web series "Transformers: Titans Return" and had a recurring role on the musical drama "Empire."
