Ross Butler Biography
Ross Fleming Butler is a Singaporean-born American actor known for his work in film and television, particularly in projects that highlight Asian-American representation. Butler began his acting career at 21 after attending an acting class gifted by a friend, which led him to pursue roles in the entertainment industry. Early appearances include guest spots on "Major Crimes" and recurring roles on Disney Channel's "K.C. Undercover" as Brett Willis and in "Teen Beach 2." From the beginning, Butler focused on challenging stereotypical casting and advocating for more nuanced portrayals of Asian-American characters.
Butler gained recognition for his role as Zach Dempsey in "13 Reasons Why," a Netflix series that became one of the platform's most-watched shows. He also played Reggie Mantle in the first season of The CW series "Riverdale." These roles established Butler as a prominent figure in television, particularly among young audiences.
Expanding into film, Butler joined the DC Extended Universe as Eugene Choi in "Shazam!" and reprised the role in "Shazam! Fury of the Gods." He also appeared as Trevor Pike in the "To All the Boys" film franchise on Netflix and voiced Spine Chief in Disney's "Raya and the Last Dragon." His work in these projects contributed to the ongoing conversation about diversity and representation in Hollywood.
Butler has also taken on producing roles, motivated by a desire to increase agency for actors and to amplify Asian-American narratives in entertainment. His feature credits include leading roles in "Perfect Addiction" and "Love in Taipei," the latter marking his work as an executive producer. Butler has consistently advocated for more inclusive casting, choosing roles that move beyond traditional stereotypes.
A classically trained pianist and multilingual performer with conversational proficiency in Spanish, Mandarin, and Arabic, Butler continues to balance mainstream appeal with a commitment to diversifying representation in Hollywood. His career reflects ongoing efforts to challenge industry norms and promote authentic storytelling in film and television.
