Joseph Daniels Biography
Joseph Daniels is recognized for his leadership in the nonprofit sector, particularly in the development and management of major memorial and museum institutions in the United States. Daniels served as CEO of the National Medal of Honor Museum following his tenure as president of the September 11 Memorial & Museum in New York. His experience on September 11, arriving for work at the World Trade Center and witnessing the attacks, influenced his approach to commemorative projects and public history.
As president and CEO of the September 11 Memorial & Museum, Daniels directed planning, construction, development, and operations, guiding the institution from its inception through execution. He secured more than $500 million in funding, managed a workforce of nearly 500, and oversaw an operating budget exceeding $80 million. Daniels developed programs and events for veterans, military members, and Medal of Honor recipients, ensuring the inclusion of military families in these initiatives.
In his role as CEO and president of the National Medal of Honor Museum, Daniels led the formation of the board of directors, secured $80 million in funding, and managed the design selection process for the museum dedicated to honoring American military service and heroism. He oversaw site selection and museum design, leading to the groundbreaking event in Arlington, Texas. The National Medal of Honor Museum opened to the public, fulfilling its mission to preserve and share the stories of decorated military personnel.
Daniels also served as president and CEO of America250, an initiative commissioned by Congress to commemorate the nation's 250th anniversary. He led the development of a strategic plan for the Semiquincentennial celebration. Prior to his work with the September 11 Memorial & Museum, Daniels was chief of external initiatives at Robin Hood Foundation, where he led the Library Initiative to establish modern libraries in underperforming New York City elementary schools. Throughout his career, Daniels has focused on institution building, public history, and the commemoration of national values, contributing to the fields of nonprofit leadership, museum management, and civic engagement.
