Johnny Herbert Biography
Johnny Herbert is a British motorsport figure known for his career in Formula One and endurance racing. Herbert competed for seven different teams in Formula One, achieving three wins, seven podiums, and 98 career points. Early in his career, he won the Formula Ford Festival at Brands Hatch and the British Formula 3 series, which led to his entry into higher levels of motorsport.
Herbert's trajectory was nearly halted by a serious accident during a Formula 3000 race, but he returned to racing and secured a victory for Mazda at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Despite significant injuries, Herbert debuted in Formula One with Benetton, finishing fourth in his first race. He subsequently raced for Tyrrell, Lotus, Ligier, Sauber, Stewart, and Jaguar, winning the British Grand Prix, Italian Grand Prix, and European Grand Prix. His win at the European Grand Prix marked the only victory for the Stewart team. Herbert also finished fourth in the World Championship standings at his career peak.
Beyond Formula One, Herbert achieved success in endurance racing, including a win at the 24 Hours of Le Mans with Mazda and the 12 Hours of Sebring with Audi. His Le Mans victory was notable as the first for a Japanese manufacturer and a rotary engine. Herbert also won the Le Mans Endurance Series.
Herbert was recognized with an MBE and induction into the Motor Sport Hall of Fame. He authored the autobiography "What Doesn't Kill You...: My Life in Motor Racing," detailing his recovery and career. After retiring from racing, Herbert joined Sky Sports as an analyst and served as an FIA steward. He also appeared on the ITV4 series "GT Academy," training contestants for the Dubai 24 Hour Race. Herbert remains active as a keynote and after-dinner speaker at motorsport events worldwide.
