John Zerilli Biography
John Zerilli is a philosopher and legal scholar whose work focuses on the intersection of cognitive science, artificial intelligence, and law. Zerilli began his career as a judicial clerk and practiced law before earning a doctorate in cognitive science and philosophy. He has conducted research at Oxford, Cambridge, and Edinburgh, and received a Cambridge Commonwealth Trust scholarship to complete the Cambridge LLM. Zerilli was awarded the Lucy Firth Prize for best publication in philosophy at Sydney University.
Zerilli serves as a senior lecturer in digital law at King's College London and program director of King's online LLM in Digital Law. He is also a research associate at the Oxford Institute for Ethics in AI and previously held a Leverhulme Fellowship at Oxford. Zerilli holds a Schmidt Sciences AI2050 Early Career Fellowship, supporting his project "Democracy, Rights, and the Rule of Law in the Data-Driven Society," which explores the impact of data and artificial intelligence on political and legal theory, including legitimacy, democracy, and rights.
Zerilli has published extensively on topics including law, political economy, philosophy, cognitive science, and artificial intelligence. He is the author of "The Adaptable Mind" (Oxford University Press) and "A Citizen's Guide to Artificial Intelligence" (MIT Press). "The Adaptable Mind" explores how neuroplasticity has influenced theories of mind in cognitive science and artificial intelligence. His research appears in journals such as Philosophy of Science, Behavioral and Brain Sciences, and Synthese.
Zerilli co-curated "Contemporary Debates in the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence" with Sven Nyholm and Atoosa Kasirzadeh, a volume addressing agency, moral status, value alignment, bias, transparency, and societal risks associated with artificial intelligence. His work spans the philosophy of mind, philosophy of science, moral and political philosophy, and linguistics, contributing to ongoing discussions about ethics, technology, and society in the digital age.
