Jim Nantz Biography
Jim Nantz is a prominent sports broadcaster known for his long career at CBS Sports. As a sportscaster, Nantz has contributed to telecasts of the National Football League, NCAA Division I men's basketball, and the PGA Tour for CBS Sports. He studied broadcasting at the University of Houston and played on the men's golf team, sharing a room with future professional golfers Fred Couples and Blaine McCallister. This early involvement in both broadcasting and golf set the stage for his enduring presence in sports media.
Nantz has anchored CBS coverage of the Masters Tournament and served as the lead play-by-play announcer for CBS's NFL coverage, as well as the NCAA men's basketball tournament. He has called play-by-play on more network broadcasts of the Final Four and Championship game than any other announcer in the tournament's history. Nantz has worked alongside Phil Simms and Tony Romo as part of the lead NFL announcer team and has called multiple Super Bowls, including Super Bowl LVIII from Las Vegas. He is recognized as the first commentator to broadcast the Super Bowl, NCAA Men's Final Four, and the Masters in the same year, achieving this milestone multiple times.
Nantz is a member of the Sports Broadcasting Hall of Fame and has been inducted into both the Pro Football and Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. He is a four-time Emmy Award winner and five-time National Sportscaster of the Year. Nantz earned consecutive Emmy Awards for Outstanding Sports Personality – Play-By-Play and received an Emmy Award for his work on the Army-Navy documentary "Game of Honor." He has also been honored with the Broadcasting & Cable Hall of Fame Lifetime Achievement Award and the NCAA President's Gerald R. Ford Award for leadership in intercollegiate athletics.
In addition to his broadcasting achievements, Nantz has advocated for Alzheimer's disease awareness. After his father's battle with Alzheimer's, Nantz authored the New York Times bestseller "Always By My Side," which reached No. 3 on the Times list. He partnered with Houston Methodist Hospital at The Texas Medical Center to establish the Nantz National Alzheimer Center, which focuses on innovative diagnostic research for Alzheimer's disease and other dementing illnesses. Nantz's signature greeting, "Hello, friends," has become a recognizable hallmark of his broadcasting style, contributing to his reputation as a trusted figure in sports media.
