Isaiah Washington Biography

Isaiah Washington is an actor and film producer whose career spans more than three decades in film, television, and humanitarian work. Washington began his career collaborating with director Spike Lee on the films "Crooklyn," "Clockers," "Girl 6," and "Get on the Bus," establishing himself early on as a dramatic presence. Before pursuing acting, he served in the United States Air Force, an experience that influenced his discipline and approach to his craft. His work in the TV film "Dancing in September" earned him a nomination for the NAACP Image Award, marking the first award nomination of his career.

Washington originated the role of cardiothoracic surgeon Dr. Preston Burke on the ABC medical drama "Grey's Anatomy." His portrayal earned him two NAACP Image Awards for Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series and a Screen Actors Guild Award. Washington later returned to reprise the role, which was noted as significant to the show's narrative arc.

Washington portrayed Thelonious Jaha on The CW science fiction series "The 100." His television career includes guest appearances on series such as "Blue Bloods," "Bull," and "Tales," as well as a recurring role in the Starz drama "P-Valley." Washington also hosted a travel cooking show on Fox Nation and made his directorial debut with the Western film "Corsicana."

Through African Ancestry, Washington learned that his maternal bloodline traces back to the Mende people of Sierra Leone. He founded The Gondobay Manga Foundation, which advocates for cooperative planning to improve the lives of people in Sierra Leone. The foundation opened the Chief Foday Golia Memorial School in Njala Kendema village for 150 students in grades K-5 and provided uniforms and school supplies. Washington is the first African American to receive full citizenship in Sierra Leone based on his genetic link to the Mende people.

Washington served as master of ceremonies for the first White House Summit on Malaria, supporting efforts to combat malaria in 15 African countries, and attended the United Nations General Assembly in New York City as an advisor to President Ernest Bai Koroma of Sierra Leone. He has also spoken at Capitol Hill about the needs of people in Africa. Washington's career in acting and advocacy has contributed to ongoing conversations in the entertainment industry and humanitarian sectors.
