Jurnee Smollett Biography
Jurnee Smollett is an American actress whose career spans more than three decades, beginning with her early work as a child. Smollett launched her career with recurring roles on television sitcoms including "Full House" and the family series "On Our Own," which she co-headlined with her siblings. Her breakthrough came with the independent film "Eve's Bayou," in which she starred opposite Samuel L. Jackson and earned the Broadcast Film Critics Award for Best Youth Performance. She later received an NAACP Image Award for her work on the TV series "Cosby" and continued to build her résumé with appearances on "Grey's Anatomy," "NYPD Blue," and "House."
As an adult, Smollett has taken on a range of roles in film and television. She starred alongside Denzel Washington and Forest Whitaker in "The Great Debaters," appeared in NBC's sports drama "Friday Night Lights," and was featured in HBO's "True Blood." Her role as Rosalee in WGN America's period drama "Underground" contributed to the network's highest-rated original scripted premiere.
Smollett's profile expanded with her portrayal of Black Canary in Warner Bros.' DC Universe film "Birds of Prey," and her performance as Letitia Lewis in HBO's supernatural horror drama "Lovecraft Country." The role earned her a Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series, a Critics Choice Super Award for Best Actress in a Horror Series, and an NAACP Image Award nomination. "Lovecraft Country" was the first TV drama to feature Black performers nominated in both the Lead Actor and Lead Actress Emmy categories.
Smollett has continued to take on diverse roles, including appearances in the legal drama "The Burial" with Jamie Foxx and Tommy Lee Jones, the crime thriller "The Order" with Jude Law and Nicholas Hoult, and the coming-of-age film "We Grown Now." She also starred in the Apple TV+ crime drama series "Smoke." Off screen, Smollett is an advocate for pay equity, women's rights, and HIV/AIDS causes, and serves on the Board of Directors for Women in Film. She is also active as a producer, developing projects with filmmakers across the entertainment industry.
